Chandigarh Sees Minimal Rain Despite Yellow Alert
A day after scattered heavy rain in some parts, Chandigarh remained mostly dry on Tuesday even as a yellow alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds was in effect. Only brief spells of light drizzle occurred at isolated places during the afternoon, and no significant rainfall was recorded by evening.
The maximum temperature rose to 36.6°C, up 1.6°C from Monday and 2.2°C above normal, indicating a return to warmer daytime conditions. The minimum temperature dropped by 2.2°C to 25.6°C, settling 1°C below normal. Relative humidity ranged between 54% and 81% during the day.
Rainfall Statistics and Seasonal Deficit
The city recorded 9.8 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending 8:30 am on Tuesday, but only 0.4 mm was measured between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. Chandigarh’s cumulative seasonal rainfall stands at 62.8 mm, which is 68.2% below normal.
Forecast: More Rain Expected from Wednesday
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has retained the yellow alert through Sunday, except Friday, for thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain, and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph at isolated places. Rainfall activity is likely to increase from Wednesday, with intermittent spells expected through Thursday. While no weather warning has been issued for Friday, another spell of rain with thunderstorms is likely over the weekend under the continuing yellow alert.
Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 34°C and 36°C over the next five days, while minimum temperatures will hover around 25°C to 27°C.
IMD Spokesperson Comments on Monsoon Activity
An IMD spokesperson said, “Monsoon conditions remain favourable over Chandigarh. Rainfall activity is expected to remain intermittent, with isolated heavy spells during the week. The spatial distribution of rainfall will continue to vary, with some areas receiving more rain than others.”
