Yogi Adityanath Targets Opposition Over Sanatan Dharma
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday accused the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) of insulting Sanatan Dharma, asserting that the previous SP government diverted funds meant for heritage conservation. Speaking at an event in Lucknow, he drew a sharp contrast between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its rivals, emphasizing the BJP's commitment to preserving cultural heritage.
Allegations of Fund Diversion
Adityanath alleged that during the SP's tenure, funds allocated for the conservation of historical and religious sites were misappropriated. “They are fond of graveyards, not heritage,” he said, referring to the opposition parties. He did not provide specific figures but claimed that the diversion had hindered efforts to protect Uttar Pradesh's cultural landmarks.
BJP's Record on Heritage
The Chief Minister highlighted the BJP government's initiatives, including the restoration of temples and the promotion of religious tourism. He noted that under the BJP, the state had allocated increased budgets for heritage sites, contrasting this with the previous administration's alleged neglect.
Political Context
The remarks come ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, where cultural and religious issues are expected to play a key role. The Congress and SP have yet to respond to the allegations. Adityanath's comments are part of a broader BJP strategy to position itself as the defender of Hindu traditions.
