The Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Rahul Navin, attended a meeting of top ED officials in Kochi on Friday. This visit comes shortly after violent protests erupted against ED officers during widespread raids linked to financial dealings involving Veena T, the daughter of opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan.
Assessment of Ongoing Investigations
According to sources, the director assessed the investigation and legal status of various cases under probe by the Kochi zonal office of the ED. The ED's action against the former chief minister's daughter was part of the investigation into the financial dealings of Cochin Minerals and Rutile Ltd (CMRL) and other entities, including Veena's company, Exalogic.
Legal Developments
With the high court dismissing CMRL's appeal against the ED probe, the agency is set to accelerate further processes in connection with the investigation. Actions such as issuing summons to Veena for recording her statement, based on documents and gadgets seized during the raids, are likely to take place soon.
Political Fallout
The ED raids led to strong protests by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] across the state. In Thiruvananthapuram, the protests turned violent, with workers vandalising vehicles of the ED officers.
