Kolkata: Twelve train services in the Baruipur-Diamond Harbour section of Sealdah Division were cancelled on Tuesday morning as some commuters blocked the tracks to protest against the earmarking of an extra half portion of a general coach into ladies’ compartment on both sides of trains.
Eastern Railway clarifies rationale
“The obstruction bears no valid reason as only a small portion of the increased capacity of EMU locals has been earmarked for women, who comprise 25% of the total suburban passenger count. There has been demand for increasing space for woman commuters. Moreover, after the number of coaches for women was increased from two to three, two pairs of additional trains were added,” an Eastern Railway official said.
Timeline of disruptions
The obstructions at Hotar from 8.20 am to 10.01 am, at Dakshin Durgapur from 10.08 am to 10.22 am and at Kalyanpur from 10.30 am to 10.52 am led to cancellations of 12 trains. The protestors argued that the move reduces space for general passengers during peak hours.
Eastern Railway officials have appealed for cooperation, stating that the decision was taken after careful study of passenger demographics and demand. They assured that no further reduction in general coach capacity would occur without consultation.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions over suburban railway space allocation in the Kolkata region, where daily commuters often face overcrowding. Women’s groups have welcomed the move as a step towards safer and more comfortable travel.
