Karnataka Cabinet Expansion Likely Soon, Says Minister Ramalinga Reddy
Karnataka Cabinet Expansion Likely Soon: Minister

Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy on Tuesday indicated that a cabinet expansion in the state is likely to happen soon. The current cabinet, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has only 14 ministers, far below the sanctioned strength of 34.

Current Cabinet Strength and Expansion Plans

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Reddy said, “The cabinet expansion may happen soon. The chief minister and the party high command are discussing the matter.” He added that the expansion would fill the vacant positions to strengthen the administration.

The state government has been under pressure from various factions within the Congress party to accommodate more legislators in the cabinet. The current strength of 14 ministers is the minimum required to run the government, but the constitution allows for up to 34 ministers, including the chief minister.

Political Context and Speculation

Political observers note that the delay in expansion has led to speculation about internal disagreements. However, Reddy dismissed such claims, stating, “There is no confusion. The process is on track.” He also hinted that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is involved in the discussions.

The expansion is expected to include representation from various communities and regions to ensure balanced development. Sources indicate that at least 10 new ministers may be inducted in the first phase.

Impact on Governance

A larger cabinet would allow the government to delegate responsibilities more effectively and improve policy implementation. Currently, several ministers hold multiple portfolios, leading to a heavy workload. For instance, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah oversees finance, while DK Shivakumar handles major irrigation projects.

The expansion is also seen as a move to reward loyal party workers and strengthen the Congress’s position ahead of upcoming local body elections. The party aims to project a united front after recent internal challenges.

When asked about a timeline, Reddy said, “It could be anytime. The chief minister will announce it at the right moment.” The last cabinet expansion took place in June 2023 when the government was formed.
