Kharge dares BJP to conduct caste census in its own states
Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge on Thursday challenged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to first conduct a caste census in states ruled by the party before preaching to others about the Karnataka caste survey report. Speaking to reporters, Kharge said, 'The subject has not come before the Cabinet yet; once it comes, we will discuss it. Why is the BJP worried?'
BJP criticism of Karnataka caste survey
The BJP has been critical of the Karnataka government's decision to table the caste census report, which was submitted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes. The report, which details the socio-economic and educational status of various castes in the state, has sparked a political debate. Kharge, however, dismissed the BJP's concerns, asserting that the report is still pending Cabinet approval.
Political implications and next steps
Kharge's remarks come amid growing demand from various communities for a nationwide caste census. The Karnataka government, led by the Congress party, has indicated that it will discuss the report in the Cabinet before taking any decision on its implementation. Kharge questioned the BJP's opposition, suggesting that the party should first implement a similar exercise in states it governs, such as Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.
According to sources, the caste census report includes data on population, economic conditions, and representation of different communities in education and employment. The Congress party has accused the BJP of opposing the census out of fear that it would expose the marginalization of backward classes under its rule.
