R Ashoka Accuses Congress of Issuing PRC for Illegal Migrants
BJP leader and former Karnataka minister R Ashoka has strongly criticized the Congress-led state government over its decision to issue Permanent Resident Certificates (PRC) to certain groups, alleging that the move is aimed at securing the votes of illegal migrants. He termed the decision unconstitutional and demanded its immediate withdrawal.
PRC Move Called Unconstitutional
Speaking to reporters in Mysuru on July 11, 2026, Ashoka said, "The Congress government is issuing PRC to illegal migrants to gain their votes. This is against the Constitution and the principles of the nation." He urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to revoke the order, warning that it could lead to demographic changes and security concerns.
The PRC is a document that certifies a person as a permanent resident of Karnataka, granting access to state-specific benefits. Critics argue that issuing it to non-residents or undocumented individuals undermines the state's resources and violates existing laws.
Political Reactions and Implications
Ashoka's remarks come amid a heated political debate over migration and citizenship in Karnataka. The BJP has consistently opposed any move that could regularize the status of undocumented immigrants, particularly from neighboring countries. "This decision will have serious consequences for the state's identity and security," Ashoka added.
The Congress government, however, has defended its policy, stating that the PRC is meant to protect the rights of marginalized communities and those who have been historically deprived. Officials have denied allegations of favoring illegal migrants, asserting that all beneficiaries are verified through due process.
As the issue gains traction, political analysts suggest it could become a major electoral issue in the upcoming local body elections. The BJP is expected to intensify its campaign against the Congress on this matter, framing it as a threat to the state's cultural and economic stability.
