Ahmedabad's First CNG Pet Crematorium Offers Dignified Farewell

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Launches Dedicated CNG Pet Crematorium

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has taken a significant step in pet welfare by formally opening the city's first dedicated, CNG-fired crematorium exclusively for pet dogs. This facility, established at an estimated cost of Rs 30 lakh, aims to provide a dignified and scientific farewell for beloved animal companions, addressing a critical gap in the city's civic infrastructure.

A Heartfelt Need for Proper Goodbyes

The necessity for such a facility was poignantly highlighted by recent incidents involving grieving pet owners. Last month, a 55-day-old Maltipoo puppy succumbed to parvovirus, leaving its owners, residents of Paldi, devastated. "We were distraught and wanted a proper send-off," said the owner, who chose to remain anonymous. With no suitable burial site available, the family opted for cremation, a process made accessible by this new civic amenity.

Similarly, the Contractor family faced the loss of Rio, their 14-year-old indie dog. Determined to avoid burial in an unmarked area where remains could be disturbed by stray animals, they sought a respectful alternative. "Rio was part of the family, a child," expressed Chitrang Contractor, an IT consultant. "We were satisfied with the way his final journey went at the civic crematorium. We were able to take him there ourselves and say our final goodbye."

State-of-the-Art Facility Design and Operations

Located at the animal birth control centre on the sewage pumping station campus in Behrampura, the crematorium was developed by AMC's cattle nuisance control department. Designed to comply with stringent health and environmental norms, the facility features:

  • A chamber capable of cremating three dogs simultaneously.
  • Primary and secondary chambers to ensure odourless and efficient cremations.
  • CCTV-enabled systems allowing pet owners to witness the cremation remotely if desired.
  • Air-conditioned seating areas for family members attending in person.

The cremation fee has been set at Rs 700 per dog. To enhance accessibility, a designated AMC van is dispatched upon calling the helpline, though families may also transport the body themselves. This initiative is part of a broader civic push to strengthen pet welfare infrastructure in Ahmedabad.

Aligning with Broader Animal Welfare Goals

Officials emphasize that this project addresses long-standing concerns among pet owners regarding the lack of proper, scientific methods for disposing of animal remains. It aligns with the National Animal Protection and Registration (NAPRE) programme, which focuses on:

  1. Public awareness and education on animal care.
  2. Pet registration and access to veterinary treatment.
  3. Free vaccination drives and overall protection of animals.
  4. Scientific disposal of dead animals, including provisions for dignified last rites.

The introduction of this crematorium marks a progressive move towards recognizing the emotional bonds between pets and their owners, ensuring that their final journey is handled with the respect and compassion they deserve. As pet ownership continues to rise in urban areas, such facilities are becoming increasingly essential in fostering a more humane and responsible society.
