In response to a worrying surge in criminal activities, the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) is set to introduce armed security personnel at the capital's iconic Signature Bridge. This decisive move aims to protect the bridge's infrastructure from persistent theft and vandalism.
Night Patrols with Firearms to Deter Criminals
Officials have outlined a detailed security plan that involves deploying guards in eight-hour shifts. During night hours, when incidents are most frequent, one guard armed with a gun will be stationed at the bridge. This step has been deemed necessary as past attempts by unarmed security to intervene have led to dangerous confrontations, with miscreants reportedly attacking guards with knives.
A senior PWD official explained the rationale, stating, "We have recorded multiple incidents where thieves have cut through iron grills and caused significant damage to the structure. These individuals are often dangerous, necessitating a stronger security presence."
Daytime Vigilance and Tender Details
For daytime security, the department will post two unarmed guards. The entire initiative falls under the annual maintenance budget, for which a tender worth Rs 1.5 crore has been floated. The PWD has specified that applicants for the security positions must be under 55 years of age and possess communication skills in both Hindi and English.
This is not the first instance of the PWD opting for armed vigilance; a similar strategy was previously employed at the Pragati Maidan corridor following comparable security challenges.
Protecting a Key Delhi Landmark
Inaugurated in 2018, the Signature Bridge is Delhi's first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge. Originally built by the Tourism Department, its maintenance is now handled by the PWD. The bridge serves as a crucial transport link, connecting the Outer Ring Road to areas like Wazirabad, Karawal Nagar, and Bhajanpura. It also provides vital connectivity to GT Road, the Shahdara flyover, and routes towards Ghaziabad and ITO.
The deployment of armed guards underscores the administration's commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure from escalating threats of theft and damage.
