Lucknow witnessed a vibrant display of communal harmony as Bada Mangal celebrations brought together Muslims, Punjabis, and Sindhis to organize bhandaras across the city on Tuesday. Saffron flags fluttered as members of different communities set up stalls in areas such as Mahanagar, Chowk, Hazratganj, and Kanpur Road, serving a variety of refreshments including boondi, sherbet, sabzi-poori, chhole-chawal, ice cream, and sweets. The focus was on helping passersby and those working in the summer heat, particularly auto-rickshaw drivers and children.
Community Participation in Bada Mangal
In Mahanagar, Sahiba Ahmad, a resident of Alambagh, along with her friend Poonam Srivastava, set up a stall serving boondi and sherbet. “This is a way of earning ‘sawab’ (blessings through good deeds). Serving together unites us in the service of humanity,” she said. Ahmad has been participating in Bada Mangal for the past two years, reflecting the growing interfaith involvement in the festival.
In Chowk, Syed Mohammad Asad continued his family’s decades-old tradition of hosting bhandaras by distributing sabzi-poori. “My focus has always been to serve rickshawpullers and those who labour in the summer heat,” he said. His commitment highlights the longstanding practice of community service during Bada Mangal.
Celebrations in Hazratganj and Kanpur Road
Punjabi Mahasabha secretary Pawan Manocha organized a bhandara in Hazratganj, where chhole-chawal and ice cream were distributed, especially for children. “This is an opportunity to serve others and seeing people leave with smiles is fulfilling,” he said. The event drew large crowds, with people from all backgrounds partaking in the festivities.
Marking the occasion, Harsh Anand and his wife Ramanpreet Kaur distributed sweets near Kanpur Road. Kaur, a resident of Aashiaana, said, “It feels special to celebrate moments that bring people together beyond communities.” Their gesture exemplified the spirit of unity that defined the day.
