Bengaluru on Brink: BWSSB Rolls Out Urgent Water Conservation Measures

BWSSB Initiates Emergency Water Conservation Plan

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has started preparing a comprehensive strategy and implementing immediate measures to conserve water and secure drinking water supply for the city's residents. The move comes as Bengaluru faces a critical water shortage, with dry conditions pushing the city to the brink of a crisis.

According to BWSSB officials, the board is focusing on reducing water wastage, optimizing distribution, and augmenting supply from alternative sources. The measures include stricter enforcement of water use regulations, repair of leakages, and public awareness campaigns.

Key Measures to Address Water Scarcity

The BWSSB has outlined several steps to tackle the situation. These include increasing the frequency of water supply monitoring, deploying teams to fix pipeline leaks promptly, and encouraging citizens to report water theft or misuse. The board is also exploring the use of treated wastewater for non-drinking purposes to conserve fresh water.

“We are taking all possible steps to ensure that every citizen gets adequate drinking water. The situation is serious, but we are confident that with collective effort, we can manage the crisis,” a BWSSB spokesperson said.

Public Cooperation Essential

The board has appealed to residents to use water judiciously and avoid wastage. It has also advised against using drinking water for gardening, car washing, or other non-essential activities. Citizens are encouraged to store water in advance and report any supply disruptions to the BWSSB helpline.

“We need the support of the public to overcome this challenge. Simple actions like fixing dripping taps and using water-efficient appliances can make a big difference,” the spokesperson added.

Long-Term Solutions Under Consideration

In addition to immediate measures, the BWSSB is working on long-term solutions to prevent future water crises. These include rainwater harvesting projects, rejuvenation of lakes, and investment in advanced water treatment technologies. The board is also coordinating with other government agencies to ensure a sustainable water supply for Bengaluru’s growing population.

The water shortage has been exacerbated by inadequate rainfall and over-extraction of groundwater. The BWSSB is monitoring the situation daily and will adjust its strategy as needed.
