Bengaluru to Build 450 km of White-Topped Roads

Bengaluru is set to receive 450 kilometres of additional white-topped roads, a move aimed at reducing dust and improving road durability, according to Karnataka's Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Krishna Byre Gowda. He argued that 7 to 8 feet of space between the service road and the main carriageway was being wasted because of poor road design.

Minister Highlights Design Flaws

Speaking about the new road projects, Byre Gowda emphasised that current road designs waste significant space. 'Seven to eight feet of space between the service road and the main carriageway is being wasted due to poor design,' he said. The new white-topped roads will incorporate better planning to utilise this space effectively, potentially for drainage or landscaping.

Benefits of White-Topped Roads

White-topped roads, made of concrete, are known for their longevity and low maintenance compared to traditional asphalt roads. They also reduce dust pollution, a major concern in Bengaluru. The 450 km addition is part of a broader infrastructure push to address the city's traffic and road quality issues.
