Bhopal Airport Access Hit by Construction and Traffic Chaos

Reaching the airport in Bhopal has become increasingly difficult as overlapping construction and inconsistent traffic controls choke the city’s two main access routes, according to commuters and transport experts.

The primary approach via VIP Road and Kamla Park Polytechnic is heavily affected. Ongoing works on the Bhadbhada–Smart Road link and the installation of a traffic signal at the polytechnic rotary have disrupted traffic flow, creating confusion over right-of-way and slowing peak-hour movement. The secondary Bhanpur stretch is similarly constrained by a new-road project that narrows lanes and redirects vehicles onto feeder roads.

Complications extend to the Ayodhya Bypass leading to the airport intersection, where active construction has left the corridor in disarray. The Karond junction and the Orange Line metro construction have further reduced road capacity, with simultaneous road-widening and metro works creating recurrent choke points on both approaches.

Urban planners warn that airport corridors require unobstructed, predictable traffic patterns. “Mixing rotaries with signals without coherent design undermines flow and safety,” said an urban development expert who requested anonymity, citing the Bhopal Haat junction as an unresolved accident hotspot. Analysts warn delays could lead to more missed flights, higher operating costs for taxi and shuttle services, and greater risk for emergency vehicles.

Unsanctioned Metro Barricade Sparks Raisen Road Gridlock

“It usually takes 30 minutes, today it’s been over two hours,” said Suresh, a private-sector worker, as metro barricading and unscheduled diversions on Raisen Road left thousands stranded on Monday.

A stretch of NH-84 was closed late Sunday for metro work without a coordinated traffic plan, creating gridlock from the ITI intersection to the Piplani petrol pump. Barricades from the Govindpura Industrial Area gate to JK Road narrowed lanes and forced vehicles onto crowded inner roads.

Traffic police later ordered metro teams to remove the barricades after officers reached the scene, but jams persisted into the evening. An official said a notice would be issued to metro management.

Raisen Road normally carries 14,500–22,100 PCU, rising to 15,000–25,000 at peak times; a high share of heavy vehicles amplified bottlenecks. Commuters and transport operators blamed poor coordination and demanded advance notice and planned diversion routes during construction.

Gas Pipeline Ruptures on Ayodhya Bypass Near Children’s Hospital

A gas pipeline was ruptured during road-widening work on the Ayodhya Bypass on Monday evening, sending fumes across the area and prompting emergency action outside a private hospital.

Heavy excavation for a 10-lane project struck the gas distribution line near the hospital, producing a loud rupture and a rapid leak. Bystanders reported eye irritation and breathing difficulty. Witnesses said panic spread quickly because newborns were in the nearby NICU and SNCU.

Hospital guard Arif Khan ran to the site with a fire extinguisher and sprayed the leak with two cylinders until responders arrived, attendees said. Initial response was led by hospital staff and locals. Construction work was suspended and the area secured while the gas agency began repairs.

Residents said a sewage line had been damaged earlier during the works, and accused contractors of failing to consult utility maps before excavation. A gas official said excavation work is being carried out in this area by other agencies. The team arrived at the site as soon as they were informed, and the leak will be repaired shortly.
