Mumbai: BJP Corporator Makarand Narwekar has appealed to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to launch a pilot project aimed at transforming Colaba Causeway into a regulated, Singapore-style hawker zone. In a letter addressed to the BMC commissioner, Narwekar proposed that the civic body should design, own, and rent out uniform street vending stalls to eligible vendors, mirroring Singapore's highly successful government-managed hawker centre system.
Proposed Model and Benefits
According to Narwekar, this BMC-led model would not only boost tourism but also generate significant revenue for the city. He emphasized the need to organize hawkers at designated spaces while strictly curbing new encroachments. The project aims to streamline stall layouts, ensuring that vibrant street commerce can coexist seamlessly with pedestrian movement. This would provide much-needed relief to local residents who have long suffered from persistent traffic snarls in the area.
Revenue and Civic Services
Narwekar pointed out that the rental income generated from the hawker stalls could be utilized by the BMC to fund high-standard civic services. These include rigorous cleanliness drives and regular waste monitoring, which are essential for maintaining hygiene and order in the bustling market area.
Improved Mobility and Tourism
“Colaba Causeway needs improved mobility. While BMC is planning many traffic changes, this model will further ease movement of pedestrians and revitalize south Mumbai’s tourism landscape,” added Narwekar. He believes that the project will enhance the overall experience for both locals and tourists, making the area more accessible and attractive.
