Mumbai: Sanjay Yelve, president of the Vikhrolikar Vikas Manch, visited the Kanjurmarg dumping ground site along with BMC and MPCB officials on Tuesday night to check the odour. He reported that “very few” garbage trucks were seen entering the site between 12.30 am and 1 am.
Inspection Details
When Yelve and his team questioned the BMC staff about the trucks, they replied that the vehicles would start entering the dumping ground after a while. However, not many were seen till 1.30 am. Yelve also noted that the odour readings taken inside the dumping ground were similar at locations with obvious foul smell and at those that did not smell. Additionally, the calibration certificate of the equipment used to check the odour and gas was not available.
Monitoring Vans Concerns
Yelve alleged that the BMC and MPCB have permanently parked two mobile air quality monitoring vans near the contractor’s office. He argued that these vans should have been moved across the dumping ground and its surroundings to get accurate readings.
Meanwhile, Yelve said the BMC did not receive any complaints from any location at the dumping site last night.
