The Bengaluru North City Corporation (BNCC) has completed 86% of its project to replace conventional streetlights with energy-efficient LED lights across its jurisdiction. According to a release, the initiative is being implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model and aims to enhance energy efficiency, improve public safety, and modernize streetlighting infrastructure.
BNCC Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar stated that installation of a centralized control and monitoring system (CCMS) switches is also in progress. Out of 1.2 lakh streetlights within BNCC limits, 59,693 were already LED lights, while 64,632 were conventional fixtures. So far, 68,907 LED streetlights have been installed, including those mounted on 14,576 vacant poles.
To address poorly illuminated areas, the corporation has initiated plans to install new streetlight poles, underground cables, and aerial bunched (AB) cables based on public complaints and field inspections. In the Yelahanka and Byatarayanapura constituencies, BNCC has proposed installing 1,313 new streetlight poles and 63.6 km of cable network at an estimated cost of Rs 5.5 crore. In the Hebbal, Pulikeshinagar, and Sarvagnanagar constituencies, 1,601 poles and 46.6 km of cable network will be installed at a cost of over Rs 3.1 crore.
This project is part of ongoing efforts to improve urban infrastructure in Bengaluru, with a focus on energy conservation and enhanced public safety through better lighting.
