Chandigarh: Rs 1.5 lakh stolen in 'oil leak' trick

A resident of Sector 46 in Chandigarh became the latest victim of the infamous 'oil leak' distraction trick, losing a bag containing approximately Rs 1.5 lakh in cash in Sector 45. The Sector 34 police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.

Incident Details

The complainant, Pratham Sharma, reported that he had gone to a private hospital in Sector 45 on Saturday to attend to a relative. After parking his car outside, he went inside for treatment. Upon returning to his vehicle and preparing to leave, a man in his 30s approached him, claiming that oil was leaking from the car's engine. Pratham checked and noticed oil spilled near the vehicle, which confused him.

The Theft

Distracted by the situation, Pratham got back into the car, only to realize that his bag, which had been kept inside, was missing. The bag contained around Rs 1.5 lakh in cash along with important documents. He immediately alerted the police via the emergency helpline.

Investigation Underway

Investigators are now scanning CCTV footage from the area to identify the accused. The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and not fall prey to such distraction techniques. Similar incidents have been reported in the past where thieves use oil leaks or other mechanical issues to divert attention and steal valuables.

This case highlights the need for increased awareness and caution, especially in public places. The police are working to track down the suspect and recover the stolen cash and documents.
