Surprise Inspections Target Pool Safety and Records
The Chandigarh Vigilance Department has initiated surprise inspections at swimming pools operated by the UT Sports Department. These visits aim to verify records, the availability of safety equipment, and the presence of adequate staff to handle emergencies. This marks the first time such checks have been conducted at local sports complexes in recent years.
Four Pools Visited in Initial Sweep
Inspectors visited four pools across the city. The UT Sports Department manages approximately 12 pools during the current season. Operational pools are located in Sector 23 (all-weather and nursery facility), Lake Sports Complex, Manimajra complex, and Sectors 8, 27, 34, 38, 39, 43, 50, and 56. The department recently converted the Sector 39 facility into a second all-weather pool.
High Summer Demand and Membership Details
During summer, pools attract large crowds, and membership drives peak. Complexes near residential areas see the highest demand. Each complex has between 200 and 300 members, in addition to professional swimmers training during designated hours.
Safety Equipment and Department Advisory
In recent years, the Sports Department has provided lifebuoy rings and other safety gear at complexes. An official from the Vigilance Department stated, “The survey (visits) is a regular feature, where various departments are covered.” Sources indicate the UT Sports Department issued an advisory to coaches and managers to update records. A circulated message read: “This appears to be a routine vigilance check. All personnel are advised to perform their duties with sincerity and integrity. Please ensure that all records, including registers, attendance sheets and training schedules are updated and readily available.”
Past Vigilance Involvement and Department Restructuring
This is the second time the Vigilance Department has been involved with the UT Sports Department recently. In 2024, it investigated a complaint at the Sector 42 sports complex regarding irregularities in the selection of a ward for the state-run academy. Separately, after a gap of nearly two decades, the UT Administration revived the post of Additional Director, Sports, allowing another deputation posting. The department now includes officers from IAS, PCS, DANICS, and UT Chandigarh cadres, making it a unique administrative unit.
