Coimbatore Launches Major Initiative to Manage Stray Dog Population
In a significant step towards improving urban animal welfare, the Coimbatore city corporation officially inaugurated 50 new kennels at the animal birth control (ABC) centre located in the Vellalore dump yard on Tuesday. This development marks a crucial enhancement in the city's infrastructure for handling stray dogs in a more systematic and humane manner.
Expanded Facilities and Operational Capacity
The newly constructed kennels, built at an investment of Rs4.13 crore, are designed to significantly boost the centre's capacity. Each kennel can accommodate up to 10 dogs at a time, providing essential space for housing, post-operative care, quarantine, and recovery following sterilization and vaccination procedures. The facility spans over an acre, ensuring ample room for the animals' well-being.
In addition to the kennels, the corporation also inaugurated an additional operation theatre at the centre, bringing the total to five. Each theatre is capable of performing at least 10 surgeries daily, which is expected to increase the number of sterilizations carried out. Furthermore, four new dog transportation vehicles were introduced to facilitate the efficient movement of stray dogs from various zones to the centre.
Strategic Zonal Management and Future Plans
According to a corporation official, the Vellalore ABC centre will primarily handle stray dogs from the south and north zones of the city. This is part of a broader network of ABC centres across Coimbatore, which includes facilities at Seernaickenpalayam for the west zone, Ukkadam Pullukadu for the central zone, and Ondipudur for the east zone.
The official also revealed that another ABC centre is currently under construction at Vellakinar. Once operational, it will take over the management of dogs from the north zone, allowing Vellalore to focus on the south zone. Until then, dogs from the north zone will continue to be sterilized at the Vellalore centre.
Aligning with Public Health and Safety Goals
This initiative is closely aligned with the city's efforts to reduce incidents of dog bites and mitigate the risk of rabies through a systematic sterilization and immunization drive. By providing dedicated spaces for care and recovery, the kennels are expected to support ongoing animal birth control efforts more effectively.
The corporation plans to coordinate with veterinarians, animal welfare groups, and field staff to ensure the proper maintenance of the kennels and the overall care of the stray dogs housed there. This collaborative approach aims to foster a sustainable and compassionate strategy for managing the city's stray dog population.
With these enhancements, Coimbatore is taking proactive steps to address animal welfare concerns while promoting public health and safety in a structured and efficient manner.
