Delayed admissions of critical patients have been identified as the reason behind an unusual number of deaths at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Mysuru. The institute handled 25 cases in its intensive care unit (ICU), which has a capacity to handle only 18 patients. This resulted in the deaths of 11 patients.
Institute's Explanation
According to officials from the institute, the high number of deaths was due to the delayed admission of critically ill patients. The ICU was overcrowded, and the staff struggled to manage the influx of severe cases. The institute has stated that the situation was unprecedented and that they are taking steps to improve patient management.
Capacity Issues
The ICU at Jayadeva Institute is designed to handle 18 patients at a time. However, during the recent surge, 25 patients were admitted, leading to a strain on resources. The institute has acknowledged that the delay in admissions for some patients worsened their conditions, ultimately leading to fatalities.
Officials emphasized that the deaths were not due to negligence but were a result of the overwhelming number of critical patients. They are working on expanding ICU capacity and streamlining admission procedures to prevent such incidents in the future.
