Delhi Implements 50% Office Capacity Rule, Offers Worker Compensation
Delhi Offices at 50% Capacity Due to Severe Pollution

The Delhi Labour Department has taken decisive action to combat the city's hazardous air pollution levels. In a significant move announced on Tuesday, it has ordered a reduction in workforce attendance across offices and commercial establishments.

New Work Restrictions to Curb Pollution

Starting from December 18, all offices and business establishments in the national capital will be permitted to operate with only 50% of their staff capacity. The remaining employees will be required to work from their homes. This directive is a direct response to the alarmingly high levels of air pollution that have engulfed Delhi, posing severe health risks to its residents.

Compensation for Construction Workers

Recognizing the financial hardship faced by daily wage earners, the department has also announced a crucial relief measure. Compensation will be provided to construction workers who are suffering income losses due to the enforcement of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). GRAP is a set of emergency measures activated to tackle worsening air quality, which often includes halting construction activities.

Exemptions for Essential Services

The 50% capacity rule, however, will not apply to critical services that ensure the city's smooth functioning. The department has granted a complete exemption to the following sectors:

  • Health and medical services
  • Police and security personnel
  • Public transport operations
  • Electricity and power supply units
  • Other essential services as deemed necessary

This exemption aims to maintain public order, healthcare, and basic utilities while the pollution control measures are in effect. The situation remains fluid, and further updates from the authorities are expected as Delhi continues its battle against toxic air.
