Delhi Proposes New Flyover to Ease Kalindi Kunj Gridlock Affecting 600,000 Vehicles
Delhi Plans Flyover to Solve Kalindi Kunj Traffic Crisis

In a significant move to tackle one of Delhi's worst traffic bottlenecks, the Delhi Traffic Police has formally proposed the construction of a major flyover at the chronically congested Kalindi Kunj junction. The ambitious plan aims to transform the commuting experience for hundreds of thousands of daily travelers connecting Delhi, Noida, and Faridabad.

The Gridlock Crisis at Kalindi Kunj

Kalindi Kunj junction has transformed from a simple crossing into one of Delhi's most gridlocked gateways, currently bearing the combined traffic load from Sarita Vihar, Faridabad, Okhla, and Noida. The situation has reached critical levels with an astonishing 600,000 vehicles passing through this junction during peak hours daily.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic Zone II) Dinesh Kumar Gupta explained how the problem has intensified recently. "The opening of Mumbai Expressway in November 2024 has exacerbated the problem," he stated. "The traffic volume has increased manifold as more vehicles from Faridabad and Badarpur heading for Noida now take this route."

Comprehensive Flyover Proposal

The Delhi Traffic Police has submitted a detailed proposal to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for constructing a two-lane, two-way flyover between Agra Canal Road and Noida, complemented by a C-curve road. This infrastructure project represents a long-term solution to the area's persistent traffic woes.

The traffic police proposal highlights a critical design flaw contributing to the congestion: five- to six-lane carriageways on the Noida side abruptly narrow to just three lanes at Kalindi Kunj. This bottleneck, combined with recent monsoon damage to the main road on the Noida side, has dramatically slowed vehicular movement.

According to sources familiar with the matter, NHAI has agreed in principle to the proposal and is likely to take it forward soon, signaling positive momentum for the much-needed infrastructure upgrade.

Immediate Relief Measures Already Underway

While planning the major flyover project, authorities have simultaneously implemented several ground-level interventions to provide immediate relief. "Apart from mulling the flyover, we have stepped up efforts to decongest the stretch by adding new lanes, expanding road space and coordinating with NHAI and UP government to fix potholes and streamline traffic flow," confirmed Gupta.

The traffic police are adopting a systematic approach, tackling traffic violations before addressing engineering flaws and infrastructural gaps, one step at a time.

Several tangible improvements have already been made:

  • The road towards Khadar Pulia has been widened by removing slabs, poles, and other obstructions, creating a free left turn towards Agra Canal Road
  • The stretch from Khadar Pulia to Kalindi Kunj has been divided with jersey barriers, streamlining traffic flow and reducing head-on collision risks
  • Encroachments near the toll plaza have been removed following coordination with MCD
  • PWD has installed high-mast lights to improve visibility and ensure safer nighttime movement
  • A new spur road under the Mumbai Expressway project has been opened, providing an alternate route for smoother vehicle dispersal

These coordinated efforts between multiple agencies have already freed up critical space, setting the stage for the more substantial upgrades planned through the proposed flyover. The comprehensive approach demonstrates authorities' commitment to solving one of Delhi's most challenging traffic situations through both immediate interventions and long-term infrastructure development.
