Delhi Rainwater Harvesting in 75 CM Shri Schools

Tripartite Agreement Signed for Water Harvesting

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with Education Minister Ashish Sood, oversaw the signing of a tripartite agreement between Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the Directorate of Education (DoE), and the Environment & Health Sanitation Society (EHSAS) to implement modern rainwater harvesting systems in 75 CM Shri Schools across the capital. The initiative, named 'Catch the Rain', aims to enhance groundwater recharge and promote sustainable water management.

Scope and Implementation

The agreement outlines the installation of state-of-the-art rainwater harvesting structures in 75 schools, which will capture rooftop runoff and channel it into recharge pits or storage tanks. According to the Delhi government, these systems are expected to harvest approximately 1.5 million liters of water annually per school, significantly reducing dependence on municipal supply. The project is part of a broader urban water conservation strategy.

Impact on Students and Community

CM Rekha Gupta stated, "This initiative will not only conserve water but also educate students about environmental stewardship. Schools will serve as models for community-led water conservation." Education Minister Ashish Sood added, "The harvested water will be used for gardening, flushing, and other non-potable purposes, reducing the schools' water bills by up to 30%." The project is expected to be completed within 12 months, with monitoring by EHSAS.
