Dharwad Forms Teams to Curb Illegal Cattle Transport

Dharwad: In anticipation of Bakrid celebrations on May 28, the district administration has established taluk-level teams comprising officials from police, revenue, transport, municipal corporation, and animal husbandry departments. These teams are tasked with curbing the illegal transportation and slaughter of cattle, according to district animal welfare society president and Deputy Commissioner Snehal R.

Enforcement of Animal Protection Laws

Chairing a meeting of officials from various departments, Snehal R stated that the teams have been constituted to strictly enforce the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020. She reiterated that the slaughter of cows, calves, and buffaloes below 13 years of age is prohibited under the law.

Monitoring and Slaughterhouse Compliance

The Deputy Commissioner directed the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) and other urban local bodies to intensify monitoring to prevent illegal transportation and slaughter of cattle within their jurisdictions. She also instructed officials to ensure that sheep, goats, and other permissible animals are slaughtered only at authorized slaughterhouses. Additionally, waste generated at these slaughterhouses must be disposed of properly.

Care for Seized Animals

Officials were instructed to make arrangements for the care of animals seized during enforcement drives by shifting them to goshalas (cow shelters). In cases where a large number of animals are rescued, authorities were told to coordinate with private goshalas for shelter and maintenance.

Appeal for Public Cooperation

Appealing to the public to maintain law and order during Bakrid celebrations, Snehal R urged everyone to strictly follow the law. She emphasized that compliance with legal provisions is essential for ensuring a peaceful and lawful observance of the festival.
