Madurai: A bill collector from Thirumangalam municipality was arrested by sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Tuesday for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000. The accused, identified as Kishore Kumar, was taken into custody following a complaint lodged by the victim, Nagarajan, a retired government employee from Puducherry.
Details of the Incident
According to DVAC sources, Nagarajan had approached Kishore Kumar for property tax fixation for a piece of land registered in his wife's name in Thirumangalam. Kishore demanded a bribe of Rs 15,000 to accept the documents. Unwilling to pay the bribe, Nagarajan filed a complaint with DVAC on the same day.
Trap Laid by DVAC
DVAC sleuths promptly laid a trap by providing Nagarajan with chemically treated currency notes. Following Kishore’s instructions, Nagarajan handed over the money to Venkateswaran, a workshop owner from Thirumangalam and a friend of Kishore. At that moment, DVAC officials caught Venkateswaran red-handed and arrested him. Subsequently, Kishore Kumar was also arrested on the same day.
Legal Action
Both individuals are currently in custody and further investigation is underway. The DVAC has reiterated its commitment to eradicating corruption and urged citizens to report any instances of bribery.
