The Special Intensive Revision (SIR)-2026 of electoral rolls has been launched by the Election Commission of India across the country, aiming to ensure a clean, accurate, and error-free voter list. Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Anand Kumar Sharma provided details during a meeting with officials at the Mini-Secretariat in Karnal on Sunday.
Door-to-Door Verification Campaign
Sharma stated that Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door verification of voters from June 15 to July 14. The campaign seeks to guarantee that no eligible voter is deprived of voting rights, while ineligible persons or deceased voters are removed from the electoral rolls following due process.
He clarified that no genuine or eligible voter would be deleted from the voter list during verification. Names of ineligible voters, if identified, will be removed only after adhering to the prescribed procedures of the Election Commission.
Qualifying Date and Young Voter Registration
July was fixed as the qualifying date for the revision exercise. Young citizens who turn 18 on or before this date will be eligible to apply for voter registration and have their names included in the electoral rolls.
Earlier, Chief Electoral Officer of Haryana, A Sreenivas, reviewed preparations for the campaign through a video conference with Deputy Commissioners and directed them to ensure its successful implementation. The Election Commission supplied enumeration forms 6, 7, and 8, along with identity cards, bags, and caps, to the personnel involved in the campaign.
Deployment and Supervision
Sharma mentioned that 1,181 BLOs have been deployed across Karnal district, with supervisors appointed to monitor their work. Subdivisional Magistrates (SDMs) will closely supervise the verification process, and district-level inspections will be conducted regularly to ensure transparency and accuracy.
Timeline and Public Participation
The draft electoral roll will be published on July 21. Claims and objections can be submitted from July 21 to August 20. Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) will dispose of all claims and objections by September 18. Citizens dissatisfied with the ERO's decision may appeal to the District Election Officer and subsequently to the Chief Electoral Officer of Haryana. The final electoral roll will be published on September 22.
Sharma urged citizens to cooperate with BLOs and election staff during the door-to-door verification drive. For information or assistance, citizens can contact the Election Commission's toll-free helpline number 1950 between 7 am and 9 pm.
Documents Required for Verification
As per Election Commission guidelines, valid documents for verification include identity cards and PPO numbers of central and state government employees and pensioners, birth certificates, passports, educational certificates, domicile certificates, caste certificates, family registers, and government-issued land or house allotment certificates. Voters may present any one of these documents to the BLO during verification.
