Gurgaon: The Municipal Corporation of Faridabad (MCF) has assured the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) that it will cease dumping fresh waste at the Bandhwari landfill from next Tuesday. This move could temporarily alleviate pressure on the overburdened dump, which has long been a source of environmental and public health concerns due to accumulating legacy waste.
According to MCG officials, Faridabad currently sends approximately 9,000 tonnes of fresh waste daily to Bandhwari, accounting for nearly 38% of the total waste dumped there each month. The landfill has been at the center of controversy because of the massive quantity of legacy waste that has collected over the years.
MCG is now urgently searching for an alternative location for dumping and processing waste. Officials stated that this step will significantly aid in clearing the dump, following an order issued last month by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. An MCG official said, “Faridabad stopping its waste disposal at Bandhwari will reduce the burden significantly. We have received a verbal assurance from the MCF that they will stop fresh waste dumping from next week.”
Despite repeated attempts, MCF Commissioner Dhirendra Khadgata was unavailable for comment. Earlier, MCG had directed MCF to halt fresh waste dumping at Bandhwari, but the practice continued.
However, some environmentalists argue that Faridabad stopping waste dumping will not substantially improve the landfill’s condition. Activist Vaishali Rana commented, “Faridabad will create a new landfill for their waste, which will only aggravate the issue. Besides, Gurgaon itself dumps around 1,500 tonnes of waste per day, which is more than the clearance they have achieved.”
On May 28, Khattar ordered MCG officials to clear the Bandhwari landfill within one year and submit daily progress reports. The landfill currently holds an estimated 18 lakh metric tonnes of accumulated legacy waste. Two agencies are engaged in treating the waste.
Khattar also directed that regular drone surveys be conducted to ensure transparent and effective monitoring of the work. He instructed officials to monitor the pace and quality of work using modern technology.
