Residents of Ferozepur have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the municipal corporation, demanding immediate resolution of the long-standing sewer crisis. If their demands are not met, they have warned of launching a hunger strike.
Background of the Crisis
The sewer system in several parts of Ferozepur has been dysfunctional for months, leading to overflowing drains, stagnant wastewater, and health hazards. Residents have repeatedly complained to the municipal authorities, but no concrete action has been taken.
Residents' Demands
The affected residents, under the banner of the Nagrik Adhikar Manch, have submitted a memorandum to the municipal commissioner. Their key demands include:
- Immediate cleaning and repair of all blocked sewer lines.
- Installation of new sewer pipes in areas where the existing system has collapsed.
- Regular monitoring and maintenance to prevent future crises.
Warning of Hunger Strike
Addressing a press conference, the president of the Nagrik Adhikar Manch stated, We have given the municipal corporation 48 hours to address our grievances. If they fail to act, we will begin an indefinite hunger strike from Monday. He further added that the strike would continue until the authorities take concrete steps.
Health Concerns
The stagnant sewage water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria. Residents, especially children and the elderly, are facing severe health issues. We cannot live like this anymore, said a local shopkeeper. Our children are falling sick every other day.
Previous Complaints Ignored
Residents claim that they have lodged multiple complaints with the municipal corporation over the past few months, but no action was taken. We have been patient, but now we have no choice but to resort to protest, said a resident of Ward No. 12.
Municipal Corporation's Response
When contacted, the municipal commissioner said that a team has been deployed to inspect the affected areas. He assured that the issues would be resolved soon but did not give a specific timeline. We are aware of the problem and are working on it, he said.
Public Support
The protest has garnered support from various local organizations and political parties. They have urged the municipal corporation to treat the matter urgently and avoid any extreme action by the residents.
The situation in Ferozepur highlights the deteriorating civic infrastructure in many parts of Punjab. Residents hope that their ultimatum will force the authorities to act swiftly and end their misery.
