Gujarat Women's Commission Achieves 74% Disposal Rate in 2024-25
In a significant development for women's welfare in Gujarat, the Gujarat State Commission for Women (GSCW) has reported a disposal rate of 74% for applications received during the 2024-25 fiscal year. This information was disclosed in a report tabled during the recently concluded budget session of the state assembly, underscoring the commission's proactive approach to addressing women's grievances.
Case Statistics and Backlog Management
According to the report, the GSCW faced a total of 2,041 applications in 2024-25, which included a backlog of 703 cases from previous years. Of these, the commission successfully disposed of 991 applications, leaving 1,050 cases pending for further action. This disposal rate highlights the commission's efforts to streamline processes and reduce delays in resolving women's issues.
Nari Adalats: A Model of Efficiency
Parallel to the GSCW's work, Nari Adalats across various districts in Gujarat demonstrated remarkable efficiency. During the same period, these adalats received 3,845 cases, including 37 pending from earlier. Impressively, 3,773 applications were disposed of, with only 72 remaining unresolved. The report notes that statistical data from Nari Adalats are regularly updated and published on the Chief Minister's dashboard on the 10th of every month, ensuring transparency and accountability.
Types of Cases Handled
The applications processed by Nari Adalats cover a wide range of issues affecting women, including:
- Physical and mental harassment
- Dowry demands and dowry-related deaths
- Molestation incidents
- Marital disputes and other family matters
These cases reflect the diverse challenges women face in society and the critical role of these institutions in providing redressal.
GSCW's NRI Cell and Legal Support
In addition to its core functions, the GSCW operates an NRI cell dedicated to assisting women married to non-resident Indians. This cell offers legal advice and support to address issues arising from such marriages. Upon receiving information in a prescribed format, the cell forwards it to the police department and the National Commission for Women for further action, ensuring a coordinated response to protect women's rights.
The report emphasizes the GSCW's commitment to enhancing women's safety and justice in Gujarat, with ongoing efforts to improve case disposal rates and expand support services. This progress marks a positive step forward in the state's initiatives to empower women and address gender-based violence effectively.
