A distressing incident unfolded on Thursday evening in Gurgaon when a Class 12 student was trapped alone inside a locked car on Sohna Road. The teenager, returning home after an examination, found herself surrounded by aggressive cab drivers who had stopped her vehicle following a minor collision. The drivers banged on the doors, assaulted her driver, and attempted to force their way into the car. The girl, locked inside, made frantic video calls to her mother, Neha, who dialed the police repeatedly. Between them, they made over 20 calls, but the police allegedly arrived only 40 minutes later.
Sequence of Events
The incident occurred near Park View City-2 in Sector 49 around 5 pm. The teenager had just dropped a friend and was traveling with driver Bhoori Singh when a cab suddenly cut in front of their vehicle. Singh tried to avoid a collision but the car brushed against the cab, causing minor damage. Within minutes, the situation escalated dramatically. The cab driver stopped in the middle of the road and summoned five to six other cabbies from nearby areas.
The men surrounded the car, choking traffic on the busy Sohna Road. Singh was allegedly dragged out and thrashed by the group, while the teenager remained inside, terrified. The cabbies repeatedly tried to force open the doors, but she managed to lock herself in and video-called her mother, Neha.
Frantic Calls for Help
According to the family, the girl first called the emergency helpline at 5:02 pm, reporting that she was trapped inside a car and surrounded by aggressive men. At 5:10 pm, police personnel called back to confirm the location. However, the PCR team allegedly arrived only at 5:39 pm, a delay of 37 minutes from the initial call. Neha later questioned the city police's claim that distress calls are attended to within seven to eight minutes. "If a child can be surrounded in broad daylight on a busy area like Sohna Road and police take 37 minutes to arrive despite repeated calls, how can anyone feel safe?" she asked.
Police Response and Settlement
Neha reached the spot with an acquaintance, but the confrontation was still ongoing even after police arrived. The matter was eventually settled after a payment of Rs 2,500 was made to the cab driver whose vehicle suffered minor damage. Police spokesperson Sandeep Kumar said the delay in response would be examined. "We will check why it took so long for police to reach the spot. Action will be taken against the police team if evidence shows negligence," he added.
This incident has raised serious concerns about public safety and police responsiveness in Gurgaon. The family has demanded a thorough investigation and accountability for the delay.
