HC Grants 4 Weeks for Thiruparankundram Survey Report

The Madras High Court on Friday granted a four-week extension to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and revenue authorities to submit their report on the joint survey conducted at Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai. A division bench comprising Justice G R Swaminathan and Justice S Srimathy issued the order while hearing a contempt petition filed by K K Ramesh, the managing trustee of Hindu Dharma Parishad in Madurai. The petitioner sought compliance with an earlier court order passed in 2025.

Court's Directive on Survey Completion

The court passed the order after authorities informed that the survey of Thiruparankundram hill had been completed and requested additional time to file the report. During the previous hearing, the bench had directed the district collector to facilitate the joint survey in coordination with the ASI and ensure its completion by May.

Background of the Petition

Earlier, the petitioner had approached the court seeking a directive to bring the entire Thiruparankundram hill under the control of the central government and the ASI. In February 2025, the court disposed of the petition by granting liberty to Hindu Dharma Parishad to submit a fresh representation to the Centre and the ASI. The court had directed the concerned authorities to consider the representation and pass appropriate orders after providing an opportunity to all parties involved, as expeditiously as possible.

The contempt petition was filed alleging non-compliance with the earlier order. The court's latest order aims to ensure that the survey report is submitted promptly, facilitating further action on the matter.
