India and Cyprus have agreed to establish a joint task force to facilitate deeper cooperation in infrastructure and shipping, according to an official statement. The decision was taken during a meeting between Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and his Cypriot counterpart, Deputy Minister of Shipping, Marine and Inland Navigation of Cyprus, Vassilios Demetriades, in New Delhi.
Key Areas of Cooperation
The joint task force will focus on identifying specific projects and areas of collaboration in the infrastructure and shipping sectors. Both sides expressed interest in enhancing connectivity, promoting sustainable shipping practices, and leveraging each other's expertise in port development and maritime logistics.
Boosting Bilateral Trade
India and Cyprus have traditionally enjoyed strong economic ties. The new task force is expected to further strengthen these ties by facilitating investments, technology transfer, and capacity building. Cyprus is a key partner for India in the European Union, and this initiative aligns with India's broader goal of enhancing maritime cooperation with EU member states.
Strategic Significance
The move is seen as strategically important given Cyprus's location at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. India's growing focus on port-led development under the Sagarmala project offers opportunities for collaboration. The task force will also explore partnerships in shipbuilding, repair, and recycling.
Both ministers emphasized the importance of sustainable and green shipping practices. They agreed to work together on initiatives to reduce carbon emissions in the maritime sector, aligning with global environmental goals.
The joint task force is expected to submit its recommendations within six months, which will then be considered for implementation by both governments.
