The Pre-University Education Department in Karnataka has issued a stern warning to parents and students regarding the proliferation of unapproved coaching centres operating under the guise of pre-university (PU) colleges. The department has labelled such practices as irregular and a direct violation of the Pre-University Rules 2024 and the Karnataka Education Act of 1983.
Violations and Consequences
According to officials, several PU colleges have been found running coaching centres without obtaining the necessary approvals from the department. These institutions are allegedly using their college premises and resources to conduct coaching classes, which are not part of the prescribed curriculum. The department has clarified that such activities are illegal and undermine the integrity of the education system.
In a circular issued recently, the department warned that any college found violating these rules could face severe penalties, including derecognition. This means that the institution could lose its official status, affecting the academic future of its students. The department has urged parents to verify the credentials of any coaching centre before enrolling their children.
Appeal to Stakeholders
The department has also appealed to college managements to strictly adhere to the regulations. It emphasised that the primary purpose of PU colleges is to provide standardised pre-university education, not to function as commercial coaching hubs. The warning comes amid growing concerns about the commercialisation of education in the state.
Parents and students are advised to report any suspicious activities to the department. Officials have promised strict action against erring institutions. The department is also planning to conduct surprise inspections to ensure compliance. This move is part of a broader effort to uphold educational standards and protect students from exploitation.
