Khader directs officials to formulate landslide prevention plan
Karnataka Minister Khader has directed the state's disaster management and agriculture departments to prepare a dedicated action plan aimed at preventing landslides in vulnerable regions. The directive was issued during a review meeting on Friday, where officials were asked to identify high-risk zones and implement mitigation measures ahead of the monsoon season.
Sowing progress and targets
Agriculture Department Joint Director Shivaprasad Gaonkar informed the minister that the total sowing target for the current season is 58,306 hectares. Out of this, approximately 36,000 hectares have already been covered, marking over 61% completion. Gaonkar attributed the progress to timely rainfall and distribution of seeds and fertilizers.
The minister emphasized the need for coordinated efforts between the agriculture and revenue departments to ensure that farmers in landslide-prone areas are relocated or provided with alternative land. He also called for the use of satellite imagery and ground surveys to map vulnerable slopes.
Previous landslide incidents
Karnataka has witnessed several landslides in the Western Ghats region in recent years, causing loss of life and property. In 2024, a major landslide in Kodagu district killed 12 people and destroyed acres of farmland. Khader noted that a proactive approach is necessary to avoid such tragedies.
The minister also instructed the disaster management authority to conduct awareness campaigns in local communities about early warning systems and evacuation procedures. Funds from the State Disaster Response Fund will be allocated for the plan, with an initial outlay of ₹50 crore.
Coordination with central agencies
Khader directed officials to coordinate with the Geological Survey of India and the Indian Meteorological Department for real-time data on soil moisture and rainfall patterns. The plan is expected to be submitted within two weeks and will include a timeline for implementation of structural measures such as retaining walls and drainage systems.
