KRISHNAGIRI: Water resources department officials on Wednesday issued flood alerts to residents living along the banks of the Thenpennai river in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai and Cuddalore districts after releasing 988 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water from the KRP dam. The water level in the reservoir rose to 50.10 feet on Wednesday due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Thenpennai river. The dam's full capacity is 52 feet.
Precautionary Measures
As a preventive step, officials began releasing 988 cusecs of water from the reservoir into the Thenpennai river, leading to stronger flows downstream. “We have instructed the public not to attempt crossing the river or to bathe in it,” said a WRD official. The inflow into the reservoir was 913 cusecs on Tuesday evening, which decreased to 865 cusecs on Wednesday.
Impact on Districts
The water release is expected to affect low-lying areas along the river in the five districts. Authorities are monitoring the situation and have advised people to stay away from the riverbanks. The alert remains in effect until further notice.
