A startling case of a living person being erroneously recorded as deceased in official revenue documents has emerged in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, prompting the district administration to take corrective measures. The incident came to light during the 'Sampoorna Samadhan Diwas' grievance redressal event held at Bilthara Road tehsil on Saturday, presided over by District Magistrate Mangla Prasad Singh and Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh.
How the Error Was Discovered
Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sharad Chaudhary reported that Chandrashekhar, a resident of Katya village, submitted a complaint stating that he had been shown as dead in the land records, known locally as khatauni. The District Magistrate took immediate notice of the complaint, reprimanded the concerned revenue official, and directed that the records be corrected without delay. He also warned of strict disciplinary action if the order was not complied with.
Details of the Mistake
An investigation into the matter revealed that Shyam Sundar, Chandrashekhar, and Rajendra were three brothers. Rajendra had actually passed away in 2018. However, due to negligence on the part of revenue department staff, Chandrashekhar was incorrectly listed as deceased in the revenue records in 2021, instead of Rajendra. The SDM confirmed that steps are being taken to rectify the error, and the necessary corrections are expected to be completed shortly.
Action Against Responsible Staff
The revenue employee found responsible for the lapse is already under suspension in connection with another case. The administration has assured that strict action will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. The 'Sampoorna Samadhan Diwas' initiative aims to address public grievances promptly, and this case underscores the importance of vigilance in maintaining accurate government records.
