The Maharashtra state cabinet on Tuesday approved a six-month extension for candidates elected to reserved seats in local self-government bodies to submit their caste validity certificates.
Reasons for Delay
Officials cited insufficient manpower in caste verification committees and the deployment of government and semi-government school teachers for census work as key reasons for delays. These factors have hindered timely school and home inquiries, leading to delays in obtaining caste validity certificates for elected candidates from reserved categories.
Cabinet Decision
Recognizing these challenges, the cabinet decided to grant another six-month extension to candidates elected in local body elections held in 2025-26. To implement this, the cabinet approved amendments to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, and Maharashtra Municipal Council, Municipal Panchayat and Industrial Town Act. The government will issue an ordinance with the approval of the Governor.
