The Maharashtra government has decided to procure 125 Remote Control Robotic Craft (RCRC) boats for disaster response forces, aimed at enhancing search and rescue operations. Each boat will cost approximately Rs 22 lakh, bringing the total budget to around Rs 28 crore.
Features of RCRC Boats
According to officials, RCRC boats are unmanned, scaled-down watercraft equipped with remote control and automated systems. They are often deployed to quickly reach drowning victims without risking human lives. These boats are equipped with GPS-enabled sonar to map water depths, monitor water quality, or assess sludge volumes in lakes and ponds.
Pilot Basis Distribution
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) initially demanded a total of 233 RCRC boats. However, with the consent of the Reference Committee, it has been decided to provide the equipment on a pilot basis to disaster-prone and coastal districts, as well as the SDRF. After reviewing the utility and requirement, the remaining districts and response mechanisms will receive the equipment.
Administrative Approval
Officials stated that administrative and financial approval has been granted for the supply of 125 RCRC equipment on a sponsorship basis, out of the total demand made by DDMA and SDMA.
Disaster Risk Reduction Agenda
Maharashtra is a multi-disaster-prone state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a 10-point agenda for disaster risk reduction, focusing on strengthening local disaster management systems to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Emphasis has been placed on empowering local agencies with disaster management materials and training to respond quickly to disasters. As per the norms of the 15th Finance Commission, response agencies are to be provided with necessary equipment and machinery for search and rescue operations through provisions under the Preparedness and Capacity Building component.
