Muvattupuzha in Darkness as Streetlights Fail, Monsoon Raises Safety Fears
Muvattupuzha Darkness: Streetlight Failure Sparks Safety Fears

Kochi: Locals and opposition councillors have alleged that several parts of Muvattupuzha remain in darkness due to non-functional streetlights, raising concerns over public safety during the ongoing monsoon season.

According to opposition leader Majeed Mangadan, streetlights have remained defunct for months in several areas of the town, including the stretch from Nandi Gate of Vellorkunnam Temple to Kadathy Fire Station Road. “With heavy rains continuing, night-time travel has become increasingly difficult for thousands of people, including women, students, workers and senior citizens who use these roads daily,” said Mangadan.

As the situation worsened, locals and opposition councillors staged a candlelight protest march to the municipal office last Friday, alleging inaction by the municipality. The issue was also raised during the municipal council meeting held on Saturday, but the councillors allege no action has been taken so far.

The opposition also expressed concern over complaints regarding the presence of anti-social elements in poorly lit and sparsely populated stretches. They alleged that the absence of streetlights has created a sense of insecurity among locals. Opposition councillors further pointed out that the lack of lighting has increased the risk of accidents, particularly due to waterlogged drains and a rise in reptile sightings during the rainy season.

Mangadan alleged that despite assurances from the municipal administration that the issue would be resolved by May 23, no action had been taken even after the end of the month. He claimed that internal disputes within the ruling council had affected civic administration and demanded immediate restoration of all streetlights and measures to ensure public safety.
