Nashik Municipal Corporation Proposes Tree Removal for Road Widening Project Ahead of 2027 Kumbh Mela
The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has put forward a significant proposal to cut down 17 trees and transplant three others along the Garware Point to XLO Point stretch within the Ambad MIDC industrial estate. This initiative is part of a crucial road widening project designed to enhance infrastructure in preparation for the upcoming 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela, a major religious gathering expected to draw millions of pilgrims to the city.
Public Consultation and Project Details
As part of the standard procedure, the civic body has actively sought suggestions and objections from local residents regarding this proposal. Residents have been given a deadline until February 5 to submit their responses, ensuring community involvement in the decision-making process. This proposal forms an integral component of NMC's broader strategy to upgrade road infrastructure across Nashik before the mega event.
A civic official elaborated on the necessity of the project, stating, "Widening this crucial route is essential because it serves as a vital link between the Ambad and Satpur MIDC areas. We anticipate a sharp increase in traffic volume during the Kumbh period, and this project aims to manage that effectively." The official further explained that the project includes white-topping the road surface, which involves laying a concrete layer over the existing asphalt to improve durability and reduce maintenance needs.
Ecological Mitigation and Compensatory Measures
Of the 20 trees identified along the 9-kilometer corridor from Garware Point to Papaya Nursery via XLO Point, three will be carefully transplanted to alternative locations, while the remaining 17 are slated for felling. To address environmental concerns, NMC has committed to implementing compensatory plantation in strict accordance with established norms.
The official detailed the ecological balance plan, noting, "Based on the estimated average age of the affected trees, which is around 10 years, we plan to plant more than 200 saplings of indigenous species across various locations in the city. This initiative is designed to offset the ecological impact and promote green cover in Nashik." This compensatory approach underscores the corporation's effort to balance developmental needs with environmental sustainability.
Project Timeline and Financial Aspects
NMC has already completed the tendering process for the road widening and white-topping project, which is estimated to cost approximately Rs 175 crore. A formal work order has been issued, and construction activities are expected to commence shortly. Officials emphasize that this road project is critical for managing the heavy vehicular pressure anticipated during the Kumbh Mela, ensuring smoother traffic flow and enhanced safety for both residents and visitors.
