Nashik Water Resources Department Issues Advisory Amid El Nino Concerns
The state water resources department has issued a directive to the Nashik Municipal Corporation, urging judicious use of water from its reserved dam quota until the end of August. This advisory comes in response to forecasts indicating that El Nino conditions are likely to affect monsoon rainfall this year.
IMD Forecast Prompts Precautionary Measures
The India Meteorological Department has predicted that El Nino conditions will be active between June and August, which is expected to adversely impact rainfall during the crucial monsoon season. In light of this forecast, the water resources department has sent a formal letter to the Nashik Municipal Corporation outlining precautionary measures.
However, municipal officials have clarified that no water cuts are planned at this time. The civic body maintains that adequate water reserves are available in its dam allocations to meet the city's needs through the current reservation period.
Sufficient Water Reserves Available
A senior NMC official explained the current water situation: "We have adequate quota of water reservations in Gangapur, Mukane and Darna dams that will cater to the city until mid-August. Moreover, monsoon will definitely come in the catchment areas of the dams by July end."
The official emphasized the administration's commitment to maintaining regular water supply: "Our priority is to provide regular and adequate water to city residents in view of rising complaints about disrupted water supply."
Detailed Water Reservation Statistics
The total water reservation for Nashik city for the 2025-26 reservation period (October 15, 2025 to July 31, 2026) amounts to 6,400 million cubic feet from three primary dams:
- 4,600 mcft in Gangapur dam
- 1,500 mcft in Mukane dam
- 300 mcft in Darna dam
As of April 14, the civic body has utilized 3,798 mcft of this allocation, leaving 2,602 mcft of reserved water remaining in the dams. Officials confirm this quantity should be sufficient to meet the city's requirements until August 15.
Historical Context and Future Outlook
NMC officials noted that similar El Nino conditions affected the region in 2023, but adequate rainfall in July and August prevented the need for water restrictions. They remain optimistic that history might repeat itself this year, with monsoon rains expected to replenish dam levels during the latter part of the season.
The water resources department's advisory represents a precautionary approach to water management, ensuring that Nashik's water resources are managed efficiently during a potentially challenging monsoon season. Municipal authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while maintaining their commitment to uninterrupted water supply for residents.
