Nashik to Implement Weekly Water Cut from Next Week Amid Monsoon Delay
Nashik Weekly Water Cut From Next Week

Nashik: The civic body is likely to introduce a once-a-week water cut across Nashik city, starting next week, as part of its contingency plan to conserve reserves amid a delayed monsoon and fears of El Niño impact, officials said.

The move follows directions from district guardian secretary Eknath Dwale, who asked the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) to ensure that existing water stock lasts till at least Aug 31, and to prioritise drinking water over other uses.

NMC officials said current reserves may last only until Aug 13 at the current consumption rate, creating a shortfall of nearly 18 days. To manage this gap, the municipal corporation is preparing a proposal for a weekly day-long shutdown in water supply, which will soon be placed before municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri for approval.

“Initially, we are planning a once-a-week water cut in the city, where there will be no supply for an entire day. The specific day will be finalised after discussions with the municipal commissioner and mayor Himgauri Aher,” an NMC official said.

Officials said that stricter curbs could follow if rainfall remains deficient. “The weekly cut is a preliminary step. Depending on rainfall and reservoir levels, we may have to consider alternate-day water supply if the situation worsens,” another official said.

For the current water reservation cycle (Oct 15, 2025, to July 31, 2026), Nashik has been allocated 6,400 mcft from Gangapur (4,600 mcft), Mukane (1,500 mcft) and Darna (300 mcft) dams. Gangapur alone meets nearly 80% of the city’s daily requirement, making reservoir levels critical in the coming weeks.

The final decision is expected after internal consultations, with the civic body urging residents to use water sparingly in view of the uncertain monsoon outlook.
