NCRB Data Shows Mixed Crime Trends in Tripura with Improvement

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has released data indicating a decreasing rate in overall crime in Tripura, presenting a mixed but improving crime scenario in the state with fluctuations in serious offences such as murder.

Overall Crime Trends

According to the NCRB, the total number of cases registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS), and Special & Local Laws (SLL) in Tripura stood at 4,532 in 2022. This figure increased to 5,002 in 2023 before declining to 4,033 in 2024, reflecting a downward trend in the most recent year.

Chargesheeting Rate Improves

The state reported an improved chargesheeting rate of 79.7% in 2024, suggesting enhanced investigative outcomes and efficiency in law enforcement. This marks a positive development in the criminal justice system.

Crimes Against Vulnerable Groups

Crimes against senior citizens showed a significant decline, with 12 cases reported in 2022, 10 in 2023, and only 5 in 2024. Similarly, atrocities against Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) remained minimal, with two cases recorded in 2022 and none in 2023 and 2024. Crimes against women also decreased gradually, with 752 cases registered in 2022 and 716 in 2024.

Murder Cases Fluctuate

On the other hand, murder cases showed fluctuation over the years, with 109 cases in 2022, 101 in 2023, and an increase to 116 in 2024. This rise in homicides warrants attention from law enforcement agencies.

Kidnapping and Cybercrime

The data indicates a sharp decline in kidnapping and abduction cases in 2024, with 105 cases in 2022, rising to 132 in 2023, and then dropping sharply to 50 in 2024. Cybercrime figures showed variation, with 30 cases reported in 2020, 36 in 2022, and 33 in 2023, indicating a stable to slightly declining trend in recent years.

Other Offences

Offences against the state numbered 30 in 2022, reduced to 16 in 2023, and slightly increased to 22 in 2024. Only one case of crime against foreign nationals was reported during this period, in 2023. These statistics provide a comprehensive overview of the crime landscape in Tripura.
