NGT Imposes Restrictions on Three Cricket Stadiums for Groundwater Violations
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has restrained activities at three cricket stadiums for failing to comply with notices regarding groundwater use. The stadiums affected are Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, and Dr D Y Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
Other Stadiums Also Under Scrutiny
In addition to the three restrained venues, the NGT had issued notices to other stadiums, including Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow and Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. These stadiums were also found to be ignoring directives related to groundwater extraction.
Details of the Tribunal's Order
The NGT's order came after reports indicated that these stadiums were extracting groundwater without proper authorization, violating environmental norms. The tribunal directed the respective state authorities to ensure compliance and submit compliance reports.
According to the NGT, the stadiums had been given multiple opportunities to respond to the notices but failed to do so, leading to the restraint order. The tribunal emphasized the need for sustainable water management in sports facilities.
Impact on Cricket Activities
The restriction is expected to affect upcoming matches and events scheduled at these venues. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been asked to cooperate with the authorities to resolve the issue.
Environmental activists have welcomed the NGT's decision, highlighting the importance of groundwater conservation. They pointed out that large-scale events at stadiums often lead to excessive water usage, which needs to be regulated.
