Old Goa Gram Sabha Implements Development Freeze for Comprehensive Study
The Old Goa gram sabha, in a significant decision on Sunday, has resolved to conduct a detailed carrying-capacity study of the village. This move aims to ensure well-planned and sustainable development in the region. As part of this initiative, the sabha has decided to disallow all mega project proposals until the study is fully completed, effectively putting a temporary halt to large-scale developments.
Concerns Over Water Bodies and Project Licenses
Panch member Vishwas Kuttikar highlighted the community's concerns, stating, "We have received 10 complaints against big projects. Such projects adversely affect our water bodies. Therefore, we will not issue licenses to such projects until the carrying-capacity study is finalized." This decision reflects the gram sabha's commitment to protecting local environmental resources and addressing residents' grievances regarding unsustainable development.
Garbage Management and Surveillance Measures
The meeting also extensively discussed the persistent garbage issue in the village. Residents demanded the installation of CCTV cameras at identified black spots to monitor and deter illegal dumping. Kuttikar emphasized, "We have received numerous complaints about garbage dumping. The gram sabha has demanded that littering be dealt with strictly, including penalizing offenders." This step aims to enhance cleanliness and enforce accountability through technological surveillance.
Beautification and Safety Initiatives
In addition to development and waste management, the sabha addressed safety and aesthetic improvements. They called for the beautification of blind spots across the village to enhance visual appeal and community spaces. Furthermore, the removal of pavers in front of certain residential areas was proposed to prevent accidents and improve pedestrian safety, showcasing a holistic approach to village welfare.
