Kerala: Pambla Dam water release triggers Periyar caution
Pambla Dam water release: Periyar residents on alert

The Kerala government has commenced the release of water from the Pambla Dam as the water level approaches the maximum permissible limit of 253 metres. The decision was taken to ensure the structural safety of the dam and to prevent any uncontrolled overflow. Authorities have issued an advisory urging residents living along the banks of the Periyar River to exercise caution and remain alert to potential changes in water flow.

Dam water level nears danger mark

According to officials from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), which manages the dam, the water level had risen steadily due to recent heavy rainfall in the catchment areas. The maximum storage capacity of the Pambla Dam is set at 253 metres, and any further increase could pose risks to the dam's integrity. As a precautionary measure, the sluice gates were opened on the morning of 4 July 2026 to release excess water downstream.

“The water level had reached 252.6 metres by early morning, and with continuous inflow, we decided to start controlled releases to maintain a safety margin,” a KSEB engineer said. The released water will flow into the Periyar River, which passes through several populated areas in Idukki and Ernakulam districts.

Advice for residents and local authorities

The district administrations of Idukki and Ernakulam have been alerted, and village officers have been instructed to warn communities near the riverbanks. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the river until the water level stabilises. Schools and anganwadis in low-lying areas have been kept on standby for potential evacuation if the situation worsens.

“We have asked people not to panic but to stay away from the river and not to attempt crossing flooded bridges or fords,” said a senior official from the Idukki District Disaster Management Authority. The release is expected to continue until the water level recedes to a safe threshold, likely within 24 to 48 hours depending on rainfall.

Background on Pambla Dam

The Pambla Dam, located in Idukki district, is a key component of the hydroelectric project on the Periyar River. It has a capacity of 253 metres and a storage volume of 4.5 million cubic metres. The dam has been a subject of periodic safety reviews, and water releases are routine during the monsoon season to manage inflows. In 2024, similar releases had caused minor flooding in downstream areas, prompting the current advisory.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in the region over the next few days, which could prolong the release. Residents are encouraged to monitor local announcements and follow instructions from revenue officials.
