Chennai: Despite recent patchwork improvements at the Perambur Loco Works railway pedestrian subway, several key safety and maintenance concerns remain unresolved, with no concrete timeline for further action from the authorities. Residents and passengers have highlighted that the absence of CCTV surveillance around the subway and booking office continues to leave the stretch vulnerable. Meanwhile, unfinished civil works and exposed electrical wiring inside the subway underscore gaps in basic upkeep.
Commuters Still Face Risks
Commuters no longer cross railway tracks, and pedestrians now largely opt for the subway as the safer, designated route. The wall has been rebuilt and secured with a locked gate, preventing direct access to the tracks. However, the structure remains incomplete, as the newly constructed concrete surface is yet to be plastered. Residents cautioned that any further delay could expose the wall to early deterioration and possible vandalism.
Lack of Surveillance Raises Alarm
“Only the compound wall has been constructed; other issues persist. There are no CCTV cameras around the subway and the station, except at the railway booking office. In the absence of surveillance, locals fear that the area could become vulnerable to anti-social activity, especially during early morning and late evening hours,” said C Raghukumar, convener of Perambur neighbourhood development forum. Residents and passengers urged the authorities to expedite the installation of surveillance systems to ensure better monitoring and public safety.
Electrical and Structural Deficiencies
Adding to the concern, one of the LED lights inside the subway has stopped functioning, with its electrical wiring reportedly left exposed. The faulty installation has raised both safety and maintenance concerns among regular users, who have called for immediate rectification. “Since footfall at Perambur Loco railway station has increased, the lack of safety features and basic amenities in the subway has become a major concern. There is no handrail for the visually impaired, and the uneven subway surface poses a risk of falls. Southern Railway has failed to act despite multiple complaints,” said M Ajitha, a passenger at Perambur Loco railway station.
Authorities Silent
Despite multiple attempts by TOI, Southern Railway officials were unavailable for comment. The lack of response has left commuters frustrated as they continue to use a facility that falls short of basic safety and accessibility standards. Urgent action is needed to address these lingering issues before any untoward incident occurs.
