Nagpur: What began as a routine drainage complaint in Trimurti Nagar has exposed a deeper civic lapse, with hundreds of plastic bottles and household waste choking a major underground drain along the Inner Ring Road. The blockage left residents dealing with overflowing wastewater and stagnant pools for nearly a fortnight, finally prompting intervention by the Public Works Department (PWD).
Residents had flagged repeated overflow onto roads, citing unhygienic conditions and the risk of mosquito breeding and water-borne diseases. When Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) teams began de-clogging, they found the drain packed with plastic waste.
A TOI visit found stagnant water along the roadside, with plastic debris floating in the channel. In one stretch, the road had caved in due to pressure from trapped water beneath the damaged drain.
NMC officials said the stretch falls under PWD jurisdiction as it runs along the Inner Ring Road, and the department was alerted for urgent action.
PWD officials who inspected the site said de-clogging alone would not suffice. The ageing drainage line, built under the Integrated Road Development Programme (IRDP), has a 50–60 metre stretch that is completely blocked, restricting flow.
"The prolonged obstruction built up pressure inside the drain during heavy rain, damaging sections of the pipeline. Mechanical cleaning alone will not solve the problem," an official said.
The department has decided to excavate the affected stretch, remove the damaged pipeline, and clear the blockage. A new pipe will be laid and linked to an existing underground chamber. Officials said the work is expected to restore flow and prevent recurring overflow.
