In an unusual incident on the Meerut–Karnal highway near the Kabaraut bridge in Shamli, currency notes fell from the backpack of a speeding biker and scattered over a stretch of nearly half a kilometer on Wednesday evening.
How the Incident Unfolded
Amit Kumar, a 30-year-old resident of Kharad village in Muzaffarnagar, reported to the police that he saw bundles of currency notes falling from the bag of a biker who was speeding past him near the Kabaraut CNG station. Kumar tried to chase the biker but could not catch up. He then collected the scattered notes and dialed 112 to inform the authorities.
Witness Accounts
Gyanendra Kumar, a jaggery seller with a shop on the highway, stated that several commuters stopped to collect the money that had rained down and later handed it over to the police. The collective effort ensured that most of the cash was recovered.
Police Response and Recovery
Additional Superintendent of Police Sumit Shukla confirmed that the police deposited six bundles of Rs 500 notes, four bundles of Rs 200 notes, and two bundles of Rs 100 notes, totaling Rs 4 lakh, in the malkhana. “The cash will be handed over to the rightful owner after verification and submission of relevant documents,” Shukla said.
Claimant Comes Forward
Shamli Station House Officer Sachin Sharma reported that a man from Budhana, Muzaffarnagar, arrived at Kotwali police station on Friday, claiming that the money belonged to him. “He had withdrawn the amount from a bank branch in Haryana’s Karnal district and was heading home when he lost it,” SHO Sharma said. Police are currently in touch with bank officials to verify the man’s claim and have requested supporting documents for confirmation.
