The Shri Renuka Yallamma Temple Development Authority has announced strict measures to address the growing menace of stray animals at the renowned shrine in Savadatti taluk, Belagavi. The decision follows numerous complaints from pilgrims about the inconvenience and danger posed by cattle and other animals roaming freely on the temple premises and the surrounding Savadatti hill region.
Rising Complaints and Safety Concerns
Officials noted that the problem has escalated in recent months, with reports of devotees being knocked down or attacked by animals. This has created fear among pilgrims, especially women, senior citizens, and children, affecting their sense of safety during darshan. The presence of stray animals has also impacted cleanliness and discipline at the shrine.
Annual Footfall and Impact
The temple attracts over one million devotees annually. However, unchecked animal movement has led to panic and accidents, increasing the risk of injuries. The authority emphasized that the situation is particularly concerning during peak days and the Yallamma fair.
Seven-Day Ultimatum to Animal Owners
Authority secretary Prabhavati Fakirpur has issued a public notice directing animal owners to remove their cattle from the temple and surrounding areas within seven days. After the deadline, the animals will be treated as strays, and action will be initiated under public nuisance laws, including confiscation.
Objectives of the Drive
The drive aims to ensure the safety, hygiene, and smooth movement of devotees. Officials clarified that the measures are not punitive but necessary to maintain order and protect pilgrims. The authority urged cooperation from the public to make the temple premises safe and clean for all visitors.
